Reaching for Independence

Launching the Early Years

Our Goal: To make sure that individuals and families can secure basic needs of food, clothing and shelter; learn to manage money and save for home ownership; maintain health and dignity while aging; and increase independence when faced with a disability.

It’s challenging to be a self-sufficient member of the community if you are elderly, disabled or just unsure of your next paycheck. Consider these facts about life in Passaic County:

* 35% of families in Passaic County spend more than the recommended 30% of their income on housing. A household must have an annual income of $32,000 to afford the median apartment rent of $747 in Passaic County.
* The high cost of housing here contributes to hunger. In Pasaic County, local food pantries have seen the demand for their services increase by 30% in the last year.
* Roughly one-third of adult Americans have less than $100 saved for an emergency, regardless of their salary level.

SUCCESS STORY: Susan entered CUMAC’s referral office shaken and distraught. Her car had just been stolen from in front of her house. Fortunately police found her car and towed it. Unfortunately, Susan had to pay $90 in cash for towing costs. Susan needed her car to drive to work the next day. She already had to take a day off to retrieve her car and she could not afford to be absent another day. This unforeseen incident forced Susan to use the money she budgeted for food to pay to get her car back. Susan was left with no money to by groceries for herself or her 3, 4, and 7-year-old children. When Susan shared this story with a close friend, her friend referred her to CUMAC. CUMAC was able to provide her with five days worth of food for her family. Because of CUMAC’s Food for the Hungry program, Susan was able to feed her family and get her car back so she could return to work. Reaching for Independence, Food for the Hungry, CUMAC
